WhidbeyHealth Takes Steps to Meet Safety and Compliance Standards for Medical Waste

WhidbeyHealth is taking steps to meet safety and compliance standards related to medical waste.

WhidbeyHealth would like to inform our community that, unfortunately, it can no longer accept Sharps and other bio-hazardous medical waste after Jan. 1, 2020 at the medical center and clinics.

As a health system, WhidbeyHealth falls under different regulations than residential waste, in part because of the sheer volume we create and must dispose of. Since we can’t determine the origin or condition of residential waste, it poses a serious and unacceptable risk to our staff.

Even as a hospital, we engage a specialist vendor to help us navigate the complexity of safety and compliance requirements. The good news is that there are plenty of other places to dispose of medical waste – some of which don’t even require leaving home. https://www.islandcountywa.gov/PublicWorks/solidwaste/Pages/Residential-Medications--Sharps.aspx.

WhidbeyHealth appreciates the fact that island residents do a good job of properly disposing of residential waste, which contributes to keeping needles and syringes out of reach from our neighbors struggling with opioid addiction.

In short, we want to keep our staff safe. We want to make sure no dangerous waste circulates around our neighborhoods. We want to make sure the hospital is complying with the Washington State Department of Ecology, the EPA and OSHA.
