WhidbeyHealth Surgical Care
John Hassapis MD

General surgeon John Hassapis, MD, joined our medical staff in July 2014. After completing his formal training in Chicago, Ill., he spent the next 19 years at a critical access hospital in Fortuna, Calif. Dr. Hassapis says that WhidbeyHealth Medical Center is very much like his previous hospital and arriving here "felt like coming home." Hassapis chose the critical access hospital in order to use his broad training in general surgery. In addition to standard operations to treat breast, colorectal and thyroid cancers, as well as parathyroid issues and hernia repair, he also performs endoscopy and colonscopy procedures. Hassapis can perform many operations laparoscopically, also known as minimally invasive surgery.

Patient Care Philosophy

  • "Maybe I'm 'old school,' but I enjoy meeting and talking to my patients in the office without a computer in the way. I also enjoy that, in a community as small as Whidbey Island, patients are my neighbors and acquaintances who I see around town. It is great to bring this breadth of surgical care to Whidbey, so that people do not have to leave the island to get their surgeries."
