THE CHALLENGE

THE CHALLENGE

The Journey to Health

In the early 1850’s, Dr. John Kellogg, the island’s first long termed physician used horse and buggy or a dugout canoe to reach patients in need.

A Common Need

The idea of Neighbors helping neighbors was an ingrained ethic, fueling the island’s passion and commitment to build a local hospital.

In the Hands of Women

When challenging childbirths, sick infants and epidemics like diphtheria and smallpox struck, it was predominately women who stepped in to care for each other’s families.

It’s no surprise that a group of women lead the charge to build a hospital and bring reliable healthcare close to home

Whidbey Island Home Hospitals

Challenging travel conditions stimulated the growth of home hospitals. Women, often without any professional training, would care for the sick and injured in their homes, scattered across the island.

Tireless Hospital Advocates

Pauline “Polly” Harpole, the island’s first public health nurse, established ‘Twill-do’ maternity home in 1934 where she delivered over 3,000 babies. She went on to establish multiple clinics, a mobile x-ray unit and a speech workshop as well as her daring 18-minute emergency transports to a waiting ferry.

Commitment to the Community

Shortly after WWII, Carskadden organized the first hospital association working to acquire the Navy hospital during one of its rumored closings. While the Navy hospital didn’t close, a new wing was added. Carskadden through his unfaltering support behind the guilds efforts to build a Whidbey hospital controlled at a local level.

HIs life-long dream was realized when he attended the dedication of Whidbey General Hospital in 1970.
