PATIENT NAVIGATOR PROGRAM

Every new patient should know about our Patient Navigator Program. The RN Navigator will help to guide you through the healthcare system by helping you to coordinate your care. The RN navigator can get you access to financial support, if needed and even help to assure you get to appointments on time.

Family members and friends are encouraged to accompany you on appointments. Loved ones may stay with you during procedures such as chemotherapy or blood transfusions.

The clinic offers a comfortable, nurturing environment. Enjoy a respite outdoors in our peaceful garden under a covered area or take some time for meditation and reflection in our quiet room. Internet access is available for your convenience.

This is no doubt a challenging time for you, but you have placed your care in good hands. We will support you on every step of this journey with the excellence and compassion you deserve.

Types of Cancer

Breast cancer, hematopoietic (blood cancer or lymphoma), lung cancer, colon and rectum cancer, prostate cancer and bladder cancer made up nearly 90 percent of the cancers treated at WhidbeyHealth in recent years.

Resources for National Organizations

• The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship has created a free Cancer Survival Toolbox, an audio program that teaches people to more effectively cope with the challenge of cancer.
• The American Cancer Society contains a wealth of information for people who face cancer and their loved ones. Learn about research, patient services, prevention, early detection, treatment and more.
• The National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service provides scientifically sound, unbiased information about all aspects of cancer, including research, prevention, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment.
• The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is dedicated to funding blood cancer research and to providing education and patient services.
• The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com provides treatment information and other resources on mesothelioma cancer, which most commonly develops in the lungs of people who were exposed to asbestos.
• The Mesothelioma Guide seeks to "restore hope for mesothelioma patients." Their mission is to guide mesothelioma patients to better health care options and to find a cure.
• The Mesothelioma Group supports and encourages mesothelioma patients and their families. The organization offers free education, support services and guidance to those impacted by mesothelioma.
• Chemocare.com is the website of cancer survivor and former Olympic gold medalist skater Scott Hamilton, which provides current information on chemotherapy for cancer patients and their caregivers, families and friends.
• Cancercare.org offers individuals with cancer free professional assistance, including counseling, education and online support groups.
• The United Ostomy Association provides support, information and advocacy to ostomates and their caregivers.
• All tobacco-related cancers are preventable. Tobacco cessation is addressed by many sites, including some of those listed above as well as smokefree.gov, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Surgeon General.

Other Whidbey Island Area Resources

• The Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program provides free breast, cervical, and colon cancer screening to low-income people in Washington state. The program for Island County is managed by Citrine Health in Everett, Wash.
• Enso House on South Whidbey offers free, day-long retreats for caregivers every March, May, July and October to address the issues of burn-out and renewal.
• Harmony Hill Retreat Center in Union, Wash. features a cancer program that supports individuals affected by a cancer diagnosis, including caregivers and health professionals.
• Good Cheer Food Bank provides food assistance based on income guidelines and immediate need. Two Good Cheer thrift stores can assist you with clothing and other needs.
• North Whidbey Help House in Oak Harbor provides food bank assistance based on income guidelines and immediate need. Call 360-675-0681.
• The Coupeville Food Bank is located at the Boys & Girls Club on Wednesdays on North Main Street.
• Small Miracles Medical Support Fund (no website) provides Coupeville residents with financial assistance for medical-related costs. Payments are made directly to providers. Call 360-672-5651 or write to P.O. Box 912, Coupeville, WA, 98239.
• Friends of Friends Medical Support Fund provides South Whidbey residents with financial support for medical-related costs. Payments are made directly to providers.
• Compass Health offers mental health services in Island, San Juan, Skagit and Snohomish counties.
• Island Paratransit is a free, curb to curb bus service of Island Transit for individuals with disabilities or limitations who are unable to access the scheduled transit route system.
• Senior Services of Island County is the largest nonprofit agency serving older adults in Island County. They provide many services, including assistance with nutrition, transportation and respite care.
