What does 'Intensive Care' really mean?
WhidbeyHealth's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a highly organized system with dedicated teams who care for critically ill patients, or patients who require enhanced monitoring and support after surgery and before discharge to our inpatient units.
What happens in the ICU?
Admission to the ICU can be daunting to patients and families due to the complicated array of intravenous lines, tubes, wires and monitoring equipment.
ICU patients can be connected to a wide range of machines, the most common being a heart monitor and ventilators which are used when patients can’t breathe for themselves. Many ICU machines beep and make loud noises and alarms to let staff know if a patient’s condition changes.
There are also likely to be several tubes either putting fluid and nutrients into the patient or taking other fluids out.
Patients in the WhidbeyHealth ICU can expect our 'multidisciplinary team' - expert physicians, nurses and technicians who come together to meet each patient's individual needs.
It is understandable that some people find an Intensive Care Unit to be noisy and distressing. Patients and family members are an important member of the team. We encourage you to ask questions and offer information you think useful at any time.

The Covid-19 crisis has turned a spotlight on Respiratory Therapists and their use of ventilators and other critical, lifesaving respiratory therapies. These front-line heroes are on call 24/7, treating patients of all ages. They collaborate with diagnostic imaging and lab teams to identify the cause of each patient’s breathing issues; developing customized treatment plans based on comprehensive, patient driven protocol to aid recovery.
In addition to emergency treatment, therapists work with individual patients throughout the hospital, evaluating their condition and progress. They conduct Pulmonary function tests, provide therapeutic treatments, and one-on-one instruction to prepare patients to manage their own medication and breathing treatments after discharge.
Respiratory therapists also provide pulmonary rehabilitation classes at the WhidbeyHealth Life Center.
