Occupational and Physical Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) both focus on improving an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and enhance their quality of life. While there is some overlap between the two, they have distinct differences in their goals, approaches, and areas of focus.

While OT and PT share common goals of improving individuals’ functioning and independence, they have distinct roles and approaches tailored to the specific needs of their clients. In many cases, individuals may benefit from receiving both occupational therapy and physical therapy services as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Occupational Therapy

The primary goal of occupational therapy is to help individuals develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for daily living and meaningful activities. Rather than just treating an injury, they work with patients to understand how a condition or injury is affecting all aspects of their lives. Occupational therapists work with clients to address physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and sensory impairments that may affect their ability to engage in activities such as self-care, work, leisure, and social participation.

OT addresses a broad range of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial issues that impact an individual’s ability to participate in meaningful activities. Interventions are highly individualized and may vary depending on the client’s age, diagnosis, goals, and environmental factors.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy primarily focuses on musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and pulmonary conditions affecting movement and function. PT is centered around a specific injury or condition and how it limits the patient from taking part in desired activities. Physical therapists work with people who have sustained an injury and are trying to improve movement, mobility, and function; prevent additional injury; alleviate pain; and promote overall wellness through exercises, manual therapy techniques, and other interventions.

Physical therapists will develop a treatment plan to help strengthen the affected area, increase range of motion and mobility, reduce pain, healing or aligning bones and joints, reducing swelling and inflammation, and more. Techniques used could include therapeutic exercises, manual therapy (such as massage), gait and balance training, posture correction, ice or heat therapy, modalities (such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation), and patient education on body mechanics and injury prevention.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

At WhidbeyHealth, our evidence-based, multidisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation program is designed to help patients rebuild strength, decrease symptoms and enable you to enjoy a healthier, active life.

Talk to your primary care provider about Pulmonary Rehabilitation if you have had one of the following diagnoses:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Asthma/Asthmatic Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Restrictive Lung Diseases
  • Lung Cancer
  • Before/After Lung Transplantation
  • Pulmonary Hypertension

We also work with patients recovering from thoracic trauma and respiratory surgery, among other pulmonary procedures. Pulmonary Rehabilitation following an event is key to helping you rebuild strength and ultimately return to a healthier, active lifestyle.

  • Helps gain control of your breathing
  • Offers education about lung problems, medications, breathing techniques and nutrition
  • Improves your strength and endurance through a monitored exercise program
  • Offers tips and techniques to handle stress, anxiety and shortness of breath
  • May reduce your visits to the medical center for breathing problems

If you would like to regain strength, reduce symptoms, and make it easier to manage routine activities, our therapy program can help you reach your goals. Medicare and other insurance plans often pay for all or a portion of this program. Talk to your provider today about referring you for Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is a specialized form of therapy aimed at evaluating and treating communication and swallowing disorders in adults. These disorders may arise from neurological conditions, traumatic brain injury, stroke, degenerative diseases, voice disorders, cognitive impairments or structural abnormalities.

Speech therapists assess and treat a wide range of communication disorders in adults, including:

  • Aphasia
  • Dysarthria
  • Apraxia of speech
  • Voice Disorders
  • Fluency Disorders

Speech therapy may involve cognitive-communication interventions aimed at improving cognitive skills related to communication, such as attention, memory, problem-solving, reasoning and social communication skills. These interventions are particularly beneficial for adults with cognitive impairments resulting from brain injury, stroke or neurodegenerative diseases.

Adults with voice disorders, such as vocal nodules, vocal cord paralysis or vocal hyperfunction, may benefit from voice therapy techniques aimed at improving vocal quality, reducing vocal strain and optimizing vocal function.

Speech therapists also assess and treat swallowing difficulties in adults, known as dysphagia. Dysphagia can result from neurological conditions, structural abnormalities or other medical issues. Therapeutic interventions may include swallowing exercises, compensatory strategies, diet modifications, and education on safe swallowing techniques.

Overall, speech therapy for adults is tailored to address the specific needs and goals of each individual, with the ultimate aim of improving communication effectiveness and overall quality of life.
