Service Overview

Enjoying life to its fullest can be a challenge if you’re in constant pain. Likewise, a fall or break can leave you with a long road to recovery.

From initial diagnosis and treatment through rehab or post-surgical therapy, our orthopedic team will be with you every step of the way, with customized program and procedures to meet your specific needs.

At WhidbeyHealth, we believe every patient has unique needs. Your orthopedic team will work with you to identify a plan of action tailored to your specific needs. Our approach is to provide individualized care with an emphasis on non-operative treatment.

WhidbeyHealth has adopted a groundbreaking process called ERAS, an international clinical standard which is designed to achieve early recovery for patients having major surgery. Using our ERAS protocol, you and your team will plan your entire path through the total joint replacement process, from your first consultation to your final clinic appointment after surgery.

Every patient’s care plan is uniquely designed to meet their needs, and includes:

  • Attendance at our Total Joint Education Classes –  ‘Boot Camp’ ensures you are ready for surgery and your in-home recovery.
  • Individual consultations with your team of specialists
  • Getting physically ready for surgery and your hospital stay
  • Preparing your family and home for a safe recovery period
  • Access to your care team around the clock after discharge

Joint replacement patients begin working with their rehab teams right after surgery and most return home the day after surgery. Some patients are able to return home the same day of their surgery.

What is Total Joint Replacement?

Total Joint Replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic or ceramic device called a prosthesis which returns the easy movement of normal, healthy joint.

It has become one of the most popular surgeries available because of its high success rate and the huge impact on a patient’s overall quality of life. More than 600,000* knee and 450,000* hip replacement surgeries are performed in the U.S. annually.

Depending on the requirements of your insurance provider, scheduling an appointment with our orthopedic team may require a referral from your Primary Care Provider.

Medicare and most state insurance companies do not require a referral, however we recommend you check with your insurance provider prior to making an appointment.

Orthopedic Hip and Knee Pain

Living with Knee or Hip Pain

Living with hip or knee pain often makes daily activities difficult or even impossible. Simple movements like standing up, sitting down, or climbing stairs become very painful. Worsening pain over time can mean less enjoyment of hobbies and ordinary activities like cooking, shopping, or travel to see family.

In many cases, joint pain is caused by damage to the cartilage that lines the ends of the bones (articular cartilage)—either from arthritis, a fracture, or another condition. When treatments like anti-inflammatory drugs, exercise or physical therapy have not given enough relief, your doctor may recommend joint replacement surgery. Usually, your doctor will refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for an initial evaluation.

If you are living with joint pain and non-operative measures are unable to resolve the pain, you are a candidate for joint replacement.

Hips and knees are the most commonly performed joint replacements. Patients who have hip or knee replacements can have an improved quality of life and pain-free return to activities of daily living.
