Your lungs work hard for you every moment of every day, bringing in oxygen to fuel your body and releasing carbon dioxide as waste. But too often, we don’t think about lung health until problems arise. October is Healthy Lung Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of lung health and the resources available to keep you breathing well.
Why lung health matters
Healthy lungs are essential for living an active, independent life. Conditions like asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pneumonia, and pulmonary fibrosis can make it difficult to do everyday activities and, if left untreated, can significantly impact quality of life. Protecting your lungs starts with prevention: avoid smoking and exposure to pollutants, keep up with vaccinations, and don’t ignore symptoms like chronic cough, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
