Each November, National Hospice and Palliative Care Month recognizes the caregivers, clinicians, and volunteers who bring comfort, dignity, and peace to people facing serious or life-limiting illnesses. It’s a time to raise awareness of the compassionate support hospice and palliative care teams provide for both patients and their families.

At WhidbeyHealth, we believe that every person deserves care that honors their values, preferences, and quality of life. Our Hospice and Palliative Care programs are designed to do just that – helping patients live fully and comfortably, surrounded by support and compassion.

What’s the Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

Palliative Care is specialized medical care focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of serious illness at any stage but provides the best results when introduced early in your care and provided at the same time as curative treatments. Its goal is to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families through pain management, emotional support, and coordinated care.

The WhidbeyHealth team works closely with your primary provider, specialist, or hospitalist to provide the best supportive care for patients and families facing serious illness. Palliative Care is a consult service and does require a provider’s order. Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers typically cover Palliative Care services.

Hospice, on the other hand, focuses on comfort when a cure is no longer possible. Typically available to those with a life expectancy of six months or less, hospice provides compassionate end-of-life care that honors each person’s values and wishes. It offers physical, emotional, and spiritual support not only to patients, but also to their loved ones during and after loss.

Services are typically provided in the home, where most patients prefer to be. Hospice offers an alternative to therapies focused on life-prolonging measures that may be difficult, may cause more symptoms, or are not aligned with a person’s goals. Hospice provides all medications, services and equipment necessary for patient comfort as well as grief support for up to 13 months. WhidbeyHealth Hospice is Medicare-certified, which means that patients on Medicare receive Hospice services at no cost.

Why It Matters

Hospice and Palliative Care empower patients and families to focus on what truly matters – spending time together, finding comfort, and maintaining dignity and control over their care decisions. Studies show that patients receiving Palliative Care or Hospice often experience better pain management, fewer hospitalizations, and greater emotional well-being.

A Community of Caring

Hospice and palliative care are about more than medicine – they’re about connection, respect, and ensuring that no one faces a serious illness alone. Our dedicated teams serve patients across Whidbey Island with compassion and expertise, helping them find comfort and meaning at every stage of life.
