Winter brings beauty to Whidbey Island – but it also brings hazards like icy sidewalks, slick roads, and chilly winds. A few simple precautions can help you stay safe and comfortable all season long.
Watch your step. Falls are one of the most common winter injuries, especially among older adults. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear and take small steps on icy or wet surfaces. Keep walkways and driveways clear of snow and debris, and use sand or salt for added traction.
Dress for the weather. Layer up to retain body heat, and don’t forget hats, scarves, and gloves. Hypothermia and frostbite can develop quickly in cold, windy conditions – even during short outings.
Drive safely. Allow extra time for travel, keep your gas tank at least half full, and store an emergency kit in your car with blankets, water, and snacks.
Heat your home safely. Keep space heaters away from flammable materials and ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
Prepare for power outages. Winter storms on Whidbey Island can occasionally lead to power interruptions. Stock up on flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, nonperishable food, and bottled water. Keep phones and medical devices charged whenever possible. Avoid using gas ovens or outdoor grills for indoor heat – these can produce deadly carbon monoxide. If you rely on powered medical equipment, make a backup plan with friends, family, or local emergency services in case of an extended outage.
Keep in mind: Customers with Life Support status on their account receive advanced notice, when possible, for scheduled outages, including Public Safety Power Shutoffs. To learn more, visit pse.com/Medical or call PSE Customer Care at 1-888-225-5773 to request Life Support status on your account.
Check on neighbors. Seniors and those living alone may need extra support during cold snaps. A quick call or visit can make all the difference.
