Announcing our latest upgrade!

WhidbeyHealth Medical Center recently installed a new, tablet-based CT scanner from Siemens Healthineers. The system, called SOMATOM go.Top, provides high-quality imaging with low radiation doses and supports advanced CT procedures with enhanced diagnostic accuracy. The system also reduces imaging artifacts from implanted devices, such as knee and hip implants and dental fillings, which improves image quality.

The new CT system features automated technology that can help with selecting the most optimal radiation dose for every patient and exam from pediatrics to the elderly. It is also equipped with Siemens’ latest exclusive technologies to reduce unnecessary radiation for a wide range of routine procedures.

Technicians can operate the system using a touch-screen tablet and remote control, allowing them to remain in the room longer with the patients during preparation for the exam. This can improve patient experience, particularly for patients who have mobility challenges and need additional support.

Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring

With the addition of the new, state-of-the-art Siemens SOMATOM go.Top CT, WhidbeyHealth now has the ability to offer Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scoring.

CAC scoring is a diagnostic procedure that assesses the level of calcium deposits within the coronary arteries – crucial blood vessels supplying the heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. This scoring system provides valuable insights into the presence and extent of atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the buildup of plaque in artery walls. By utilizing non-invasive imaging through CT scans, physicians can accurately visualize and quantify these calcium deposits. The severity of calcification is then evaluated using a scoring system, which considers factors such as the density and distribution of the calcium deposits.

CAC scoring does not directly assess the presence of non-calcified plaque or other factors that may contribute to cardiovascular risk. Therefore, it is often used in conjunction with other risk assessment tools and clinical evaluation to provide a comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular risk to help healthcare providers identify individuals who may be at increased risk for heart attacks and strokes.

Because the test emits a low dose of radiation, a referral from your primary care provider is required. The test isn’t always covered by insurance but is available at a relatively low cost ($150).

Lung Cancer Screening

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, partly due to the inability to detect the disease early with the traditional chest x-ray screening.

Thanks to advanced lung cancer screening technology, smokers and past smokers may have a new lease on a long life. This Low Dose CT (Computed Tomography) Lung Screening can detect tumors that 80% of chest x-rays don’t reveal.

The test itself takes about five minutes and identifies tumors in high-risk patients, while a tumor may still be curable with surgery, and has the potential to reduce the number of deaths from cancer in the U.S. by a whopping 20%.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website, Medicare will cover lung cancer screening with Low Dose CT once per year for Medicare beneficiaries who meet all of the following criteria:

  • They are age 55-77, and are either current smokers or have quit smoking within the last 15 years
  • They have a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 “pack years” (an average of one pack a day for 30 years)
  • They receive a written order from a physician or qualified non-physician practitioner that meets certain requirements
