Your Food Prescription

“Food as medicine” is where nutrition meets healthcare. The fact that diet can impact a person’s health is widely embraced by healthcare providers around the world. According to the World Health Organization, “Better nutrition is related to improved infant, child and maternal health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy and childbirth, lower risk of non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease), and longevity.”

Whether you’re addressing inflammation, cholesterol levels, elevated blood pressure, sleep problems, poor gut health or other chronic diseases, proper nutrition can be integral to supporting your overall health.

Nutrition Therapy can be an important tool to support your treatment. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is on staff to assist you in managing your diet during cancer treatment and care.

There can be several side effects from cancer treatment or other variables which can affect your nutritional intake. Here are some guides to help you navigate the best diet during treatment. Look for nutrients to try to include or remove from your diet to maximize your health.

Anemia ─ Iron rich foods can help restore energy and give you the boost you need during treatment

Constipation ─ Nutrition therapy for constipation includes adding high fiber foods to your diet.

Diarrhea ─ To avoid diarrhea, it may be helpful to add these lower fiber foods to your diet.

Food safety ─ Fend off any increased infection risk through food safety nutrition therapy.

Neutropenic/low microbial diet

Nausea and vomiting ─ Tips to control nausea and vomiting with nutrition therapy.

Underweight ─ Here are some suggestions for increasing calories and protein to bring your weight back to balance.

Increasing calories and protein

Upon your request, staff or patient self-referrals will be generated to support your care.

Nutrition Management for better Blood Glucose Control is key when living with diabetes. In addition to our educational classes, our Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator can provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), which involves individualized instruction on managing your diabetes with diet.

Carbohydrate counting is the main strategy used to educate clients on using food as a tool to manage diabetes. Medicare and most insurance will pay for MNT, minus your co-pay. A separate referral is needed.
